AFS: Arrowhead Latch
2 days.Ê 9:00am Ð 4:00 pm.Ê Tuition $290. Member Tuition $250. Materials fee $50. Arrowhead latches are some of the earliest forms of forged latches in America and they come in many variations. In this class we will forge, punch, and chisel out the parts for a fairly standard arrowhead latch that can then be customized with decorative file work. A good class for the beginner and intermediate smith. Special Notes:Ê Hard shoes and long pants are required for studentÕs safety.
AFS: Make Your Own Adirondack Chair
Ê2 days. 9am-4pm.Ê Tuition $260. Member Tuition $210. Materials fee $140. In 1903, the first Adirondack chair was built in the town of Westport, N.Y. and has since taken the world by storm. Its contoured seat and back, along with its wide arms make it the perfect chair for lounging in after a hard dayÕs work. You will start with surfaced pine, cut the pieces, shape them on a router table, sand them and then assemble your own Adirondack chair. Special Notes:Ê No prior woodworking experience is necessary, but be prepared to use power tools.

Come and create your own wooden ÒquiltÓ to adorn your house, barn or cottage. In this one and a half day class you will choose a pattern and paint a stunning ÒquiltÓ to hang outdoors. AFS: Spring Lakes & Waterways Photo Tour
1 day. 1pm-9pm. Tuition $210. Member Tuition $200. Materials fee $0. A gorgeous sunset awaits you in this one-day nature photography tour, designed for those who are already comfortable with camera basics such as the relationship between aperture, shutter and ISO settings. Start this eight-hour day with a very brief introduction and discussion, then take the rest of the day to play with photo techniques in the field at beautiful nearby Adirondack lakes and waterways. A great class for those who wish to receive mentoring while in the field. Special Notes:Ê Equipment requirements include a DSLR and lens system/OR a full featured point and shoot camera (preferably with screw-on filter and tripod capability), a sturdy tripod and a remote release. In addition, bring along a full variety of focal length lenses from wide angle to telephoto and perhaps macro if you like so you can work with a variety of techniques through the day.

This fun class is an opportunity for smiths to make these essential tools and more importantly, to learn toolmaking so you may make even more tools at your shop whenever you need them. You will make various sizes of punches and drifts, as well as chisels, and we will delve into set hammers, cut-off chisels, and bottom tooling depending on interests and time available. Woven using reed, Dona will share tips on shaping up the sides. This is a student favorite of DonaÕs designs. The lid allows for students to hide away their trinkets inside. This is a quick and fun project for all, with great results! This basket is appropriate for basket weavers of all levels. Dimensions 6_ x 7_ x 7_ high.

This class is geared towards beginner to intermediate photographers who want to learn solid fundamentals and put them into practice with instruction. Dave will share an intro slideshow of his work and a discussion on ethics, safety, subject knowledge and increasing success rate. There will be a handout that covers discussion points of basic camera use, lens selection, composition and more. This class will include shooting at a local horse farm in the Saratoga area, with an opportunity to photography Mares and foals, along with older horses and scenic shots.

When these baskets were made, they were woven over a wooden mold. This basket gets its name from the points on the bottom which can be seen when turned upside down and look like the ears and head of a cat. Turn the basket back over and it lands on its woven feet. This basket is appropriate for basket weavers of all levels. Dimensions: 8_ wide x 9_ long x 10_ high with handle.

Rushton was one of the most famous canoe builders of his era. George Washington Sears, who wrote of his adventures under his pen name of Nessmuk as he recorded his paddling adventures throughout the Adirondacks, popularized these small, finely crafted canoes. Come spend 11 wonderful days with master instructor Larry Benjamin building your own Wee Lassie. You will be guided through every step of the building process. 1/2 day. 9am-1pm. Tuition $80. Member Tuition $70. Materials fee $10. The goal of this class is to help you get started in fly fishing or better your casting. We will go over different types of fly rods and when to use them. The proper way of lining a fly rod will be taught. You will be doing the over hand cast, roll cast and side arm cast, for a few examples. You will need to bring a hat and a pair of glasses or sunglasses. If you have a fly rod please bring it, otherwise one will be provided. To end, students will get a chance to try different fly rods. Special Notes: This is an active casting course. Students 16 or older who have a NYS fishing license can cast into the lake. Those without will cast on dry land. Students must bring a hat and glasses to wear for safety.

1 day. 9am-4pm. Tuition $130. Member Tuition $105. Materials fee $36. It is a rare treat to see a Trumpeter Swan! In this class you will make your own swan with its baby, which is called a cygnet. Beginning with a simple armature you will wrap, and needle felt core wool before adding the fluffy, white layers of merino wool. The skills and techniques used to sculpt with wool will be demonstrated step by step. All necessary supplies are provided in a kit.

The looms are dressed and ready to go, all you need to do is bring your creative spirit and to leave with a finished one-of-a-kind rug. Students will have a choice of making a traditional Rag Rug using recycled fabric strips or making a Sock Rug using remnants from a sock factory. Colors and choices of fabric and remnants vary from class to class depending on availability. The rugs are 24Ó wide, and up to 45Ó long.

2 days. 9am-5pm.Ê Tuition $260. Member Tuition $210. Materials fee $45. In this class, students will hand craft a beautiful pine wood box reminiscent of the Shaker craftwork. Students will begin with wood already prepared and cut to finished sizes for the project. They will work on the following skills: cutting and joining the sides/dovetail joints, gluing/planing and sanding the sides, shaping the lid and base, attaching the hardware (hinges), and finishing techniques.

This is a comprehensive introduction to bladesmithing. Each student will forge a blade using a gas forge and hand hammer, grind, heat treat and finish the blade with a wood handle. Students will be able to choose a pre-drawn pattern from a variety of designs and be guided as they learn to cut the glass (chosen from a variety of types and colors), smooth the glass pieces with a grinder, apply copper foil tape, solder the pieces together into the final piece using lead-free solder, and add jump rings or a copper wire stem. The patterns available will offer a variety of levels of difficulty so students may choose what best suits them. NOTE: Location: 1746 U.S. 9, Lake George, NY 12845, Alfred Z. Whether drying herbs and flowers for tea, medicine, or natural dyes, this basket design is useful for both harvesting and drying. The bottom is Òopenwork,Ó allowing airflow from underneath. Students will weave the corners in such a way as to raise the base as well. The sides are Òcontinuous weaveÓ in a two-by-two twill, creating a beautiful stepping-up pattern.

1/2 day. 9am-12pm. Tuition $80. Member Tuition $70. Materials fee $50. Learn the discipline of Metal Working known as Embossing. Students will transfer an image of their choosing from a paper template to a sheet of copper by using various sizes of stylus and other hand tools to create a textured picture. Students will find that copper is a very workable material. Your finished piece will fit in with any Adirondack decor or even in a rustic birch frame! This piece is 8_ x 8_.

1 day. 9am-4pm. Tuition $130. Member Tuition $710. Materials fee $90. In this class students will create a beautiful copper bowl from a 12_ x 12_ sheet of 16-gauge copper. Students will pound and hand tool the sheet into an 9_ diameter, approx. 2_ deep bowl. Students will also make a decorative vine with leaves from copper that will be attached to the rim of the bowl. Some soldering will be involved in this class.
