AFS: Medicinal Mushrooms – Use, Preparation & Cultivation w/ Cheryl Joyce

1 day. 9am-4pm. Tuition $130. Member Tuition $105. Materials fee $30. In this course, local and common non-local medicinal mushrooms will be discussed and identified. Students will learn the medicinal properties of each mushroom, how to make a double extraction tincture and how to grow oyster mushrooms at home. Students will leave with a tincture (in process that they will complete at home) and an oyster mushroom kit that will produce mushrooms after about 3 weeks. Special Notes: Students should bring 2 pint sized jars with them.

AFS: Intro. to Clay/Ceramics – Handbuilding w/ Colleen Vanderhoef (Class 1)

2 half days. 9am-12pm. Tuition $130. Member Tuition $105. Materials fee $45. Clay arts has historical common traditions across all cultures. It is easy to shape, sculpt and transform into ceramics. Imagine making bowls, cups, wind chimes and moreÉ. through the use of clay medium. This two-day workshop allows for experimentation in creating various forms (2-3 pieces per student). On day one students will learn basic hand-building pottery techniques; explore pinch, coil and slab. After a drying period of three weeks, on the second day students will learn how to decorate and glaze their piece. NOTE: Location: 1746 U.S. 9, Lake George, NY 12845, Alfred Z. Solomon Lake George Annex, located on Rt. 9 in the Log Jam Outlets immediately behind the Log Jam Restaurant. Special Notes: Dress to mess. Class is suited for students ages 8 Ð 14 w/a parent, and 15 and up on their own. Supplies include clay, tool sharing, glazing and firing. Forms made will have a drying period before firing, and then glazing. Students will need to return to pick up finished pieces or make shipping arrangements with AFS.

AFS: Fly Fishing – Casting Basics w/ Paul Sinicki

1/2 day. 9am-1pm. Tuition $80. Member Tuition $70. Materials fee $10. The goal of this class is to help you get started in fly fishing or better your casting. We will go over different types of fly rods and when to use them. The proper way of lining a fly rod will be taught. You will be doing the over hand cast, roll cast and side arm cast, for a few examples. You will need to bring a hat and a pair of glasses or sunglasses. If you have a fly rod please bring it, otherwise one will be provided. To end, students will get a chance to try different fly rods. Special Notes: This is an active casting course. Students 16 or older who have a NYS fishing license can cast into the lake. Those without will cast on dry land. Students must bring a hat and glasses to wear for safety.

AFS: Felted Trumpeter Swan w/ Leah Oles

1 day. 9am-4pm. Tuition $130. Member Tuition $105. Materials fee $36. It is a rare treat to see a Trumpeter Swan! In this class you will make your own swan with its baby, which is called a cygnet. Beginning with a simple armature you will wrap, and needle felt core wool before adding the fluffy, white layers of merino wool. The skills and techniques used to sculpt with wool will be demonstrated step by step. All necessary supplies are provided in a kit.

AFS: Forging a Rose w/ Steve Gurzler

The project will include forging details and torch work with scrolling tongs to create a custom rose. Special Notes: Hard shoes and long pants are required for studentÕs safety.

AFS: Kumiko Basics w/ Johnny Tromboukis

1/2 day. 12pm-4pm.Ê Tuition $75. Member Tuition $60. Materials fee $15. Kumiko is the delicate, geometric latticework that is traditionally found in shoji screens. It originated in Japan during the Asuka era (600 Ð 700 AD). The patterns are made by carefully cutting bevels and fitting small strips of wood together without the need for glue. There are hundreds of designs that range from simple and rectangular to very complex and intricate. In this class you will learn how to make the asanoha pattern. Translated to Òhemp leaf,Ó asanoha is the most popular pattern in Japan and is connected to the idea of growth. You will start with basswood strips and go through the process of cutting accurate half lap joints to make a grid. Then, use Kumiko jigs to cut bevels and assemble the asanoha pattern.
